Short fiction about adult lives in India

KaamwaliBai.in is an independent digital reading room for original romantic short fiction. Every story published here is written for this site, set in recognisable Indian places — a monsoon balcony in Mumbai, a guesthouse corridor in Coorg, a village courtyard under a banyan tree — and built around the quiet, complicated inner lives of working adults.

We began as a resource desk for households and domestic workers, and we still keep that practical work alive in our guides and our free salary estimator. Over time, readers told us the part they returned for was the storytelling — the people behind the work, not only the arrangements around it. That is what the site is now.

What we publish

Original romantic and emotional short fiction, typically 800 to 1,500 words, released in themed collections: Maid Stories, Romantic Stories, Real Life Inspired, Village Romance and City Encounters. Each story carries its own illustration, and most are available in English, Hindi and Marathi.

Our editorial standards

• Every character in every story is a consenting adult, 18 years or older. There are no exceptions and no ambiguity.
• Our stories are fiction. Names, employers, households and events are invented. Any resemblance to a real person is coincidental.
• Romance on this site is emotional and suggestive rather than explicit. We write tension, longing and restraint; we do not publish graphic sexual description.
• Nothing we publish is scraped, spun or reprinted from another site. Our guides cite the Indian laws and rules they rely on, and we correct errors when readers flag them.

Who we are

KaamwaliBai.in is run by a small independent editorial team based in India. Drafts are reviewed for accuracy, tone and our adult-characters rule before publication, and older stories are revisited when language or facts need updating.
